Ok boss ladies, I wanted to take some time this week to address the buzz around the word “balance”. I use this word A LOT… in my content, in my programs, and even the book we are writing that has a major focus on creating balance around work and parenthood. This word is quickly becoming a no-no and it’s time that we get clear on what this word really means… because we really do want and need balance in our lives… it just may not be what we think it is! I feel like we are seeing this word all over the place, and it shouldn't have to be a thing that causes us to cringe. We have the power to take control of this word and create the kind of “balance” that really works for our life! So, let’s get clear on how we can strive towards finding our unique balance and truly relax into our lives!
Ditch the shoulds! You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do or that doesn’t serve your life and business. With that being said, the idea that balance should be 50/50 has got to go! If you are working your life around the goal of focusing 50% on work and 50% on life, you are setting yourself up to fail!
Take a look at your life now. As you create your unique balance it is going to be important that you get really clear on what you actually want and need to be doing. What is your lifestyle like? What is your work schedule like? What about child care and downtime? Where do you fit in the things you enjoy doing? As you actually pay attention to this, you may find yourself all over the map, and that’s ok! It’s important to get clear on what you have going on so you can make a plan to actually be able to intentionally tend to everything, and feel good while doing it.
Set priorities and boundaries! As you start to discover all of the things you want to balance, you will need to get focused and clear on your priorities and boundaries. Choosing things that are non-negotiable (like undistracted time with your littles, your monday morning run, or time to create in your business) and working the rest of your days around these will help you feel like you’re finding balance in your life. Once you know your priorities, make sure you draw some lines for what you do/don’t want to do. Create concrete boundaries for when you walk away from work, take a break for some me time, or schedule time to batch content. Whatever you’re doing, make sure that it’s something you feel comfortable with.
Be flexible! As you’re creating this balance, it’s important to remember that it is going to change. Your balance today may look different than tomorrow, or next week, or next month, or the next season in your life. And that’s ok! Balance is fluid, and as long as you’re up to the task of going with the flow, being honest with yourself, and have a flexible outlook, you are going to find that magical balance in your life! Make sure you’re being patient with yourself as you navigate through this, and remember that things may not always go according to plan. Sometimes your balance is going to feel work heavy, or not enough work heavy, but it will all swing back the other way and “balance” itself out!
So there you have! I challenge you to take on some of these tips and start taking control of what balance means in your life. We all want balance, but it’s up to us to decide what that actually means to us. It doesn't have to be a bad word, because when you find your unique balance, life can be really beautiful.
